Vee-Jay Records was founded in Gary, Indiana in 1953 by Vivian Carter and James C. Bracken (Mr. and Mrs. Bracken), who used their first initials for the label's name. The first song they ever recorded made it in to the top ten of the national rhythm & blues charts. In a short time, Vee-Jay was the most successful black-owned record company in the U.S.A.; by 1963, they were charting records at a faster rate than some of the major labels. They were the first U.S. company to have the Beatles; in one month alone in early 1964, they sold 2.6 million Beatles singles. Two years later, the company was bankrupt. This beautiful, long out of print, Collector's Edition 3-CD Box Set celebrates 40 years of classic hits with 75 Vee-Jay titles and rare cuts from 1953 to 1993. This package also includes a 24 page book documenting The Vee-Jay Story (complete with producer's notes and a collection of Vee-Jay album covers) and a red 7-inch 45 rpm of Vee-Jay s first R&B hit, The Spaniels ''Goodnite Sweetheart, Goodnite''.
